National WWI Museum and Memorial

Located at 2 Memorial Dr., this fascinating museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting WWI. It has the most comprehensive collection of information and objects in the world on this defining part of world history. Congress also dedicated the museum as America’s official WWI museum and memorial. Visitors can watch a short introductory film and then walk across a glass bridge over simulated poppy fields into the museum itself.

This huge building is filled with information, artifacts, and dioramas cataloging the history of WWI from 1914 to 1918. Uniforms, weapons, tanks, and airplanes are beautifully displayed. The museum is divided into two sections, one covers the events before US entry into the war, and the other follows the American experience from 1917 onwards. They have a fantastic gift shop, and food is also available. Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

This house is a piece of history. It’s a rare example of antebellum architecture, and it was built in 1856. The building was the home of Alexander Majors, the founder of the legendary Pony Express. The museum doesn’t have any of Major’s artifacts or heirlooms but it has been extensively renovated and restored.

Period furniture and antiques have been lovingly placed to recreate the home of a pioneering entrepreneur in the expansion of the West. The museum is located at 8201 State Line Rd.
