Lake Shawnee
Lake Shawnee is not only the top outdoor attraction in the area but also one of the top travel destinations in Kansas and is right here in Topeka at 3137 SE 29th Street. There are plenty of lakeside attractions, including picturesque gardens, large open areas, beautiful parks, sports facilities, and scenic picnic areas.
Whether you want to paddle, boat, fish, swim, camp, or play golf, tennis, or volleyball, this is the ultimate destination. One of the most popular spots on the lake is Adventure Cove, an inflatable playground with a beach, water trike, paddle boat, canoe, and kayak rentals.
Kaw River State Park
The beautiful forested Kaw River State Park is just outside the city at 300 SW Wanamaker Road. Follow the scenic wide gravel surface and single-track dirt hiking and mountain biking trails along the southern bank of the Kansas River through the oak and hickory woodlands along steep slopes with spectacular views.
There is a boat ramp on the river for canoes, kayaks, and small watercraft, lovely picnic spots, and in remote areas of the forest, you’ll encounter deer, turkey, and waterfowl.
Massachusetts Street in Lawrence
Take a 26.6-mile drive to Lawrence and stroll down historic Massachusetts Street, the town’s main street, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The buildings, marked with bronze plaques, date back to the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century and include the Granada Theater, the Weaver’s Department Store, and the Free State Brewing Company.
Pop into the many unique shops, visit the Watkins Museum to learn more about the history, and take a relaxing stroll through the beautiful Japanese Friendship Garden.
The Oz Museum
It’s well worth the 44.5-mile trip to Wamego to visit the Oz Museum at 511 Lincoln Street. The fascinating museum is home to over 2,000 artifacts that relate to L. Frank Baum’s books, The Wizard of Oz movie, old silent Oz movies, and board games.
After the museum opened in 2004, several oz-related businesses, known as the Oz Cluster, opened nearby to introduce the world to the magical wonders of Oz. The museum is open Monday to Saturday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m.
