Topeka is the capital city of Kansas and rich with history. This fascinating city is worth visiting, but if you only have a day to explore, be sure to check out a few of the top attractions.
Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site
The historic ruling in the Brown vs. Board of Education legal case altered the landscape of education forever. It took place in Topeka, Kansas, where a national historic site is now dedicated to the pivotal ruling. While visiting the site, you can begin your tour in the auditorium to view a brief film that goes through the history of racism and segregation. Next, move into the Education and Justice exhibit, a gallery that examines the barriers faced by black Americans as they tried to obtain an education before the ruling took place.
Other exhibits include the kindergarten room, restored to its appearance in 1954 when the ruling happened, and an area to learn how the court decision shaped the future of the Civil Rights Movement and the continuing international impact on educational opportunities.
Great Overland Station
Great Overland Station dates back to 1927 when famous architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed it for the Union Railroad Company. It was once Union Pacific Station, although today it’s a national historic site dedicated to providing information about the pioneer heritage of the area’s residents, as well as the entrepreneurs who shaped Kansas. Exhibits on display include Choo-Choo Junction, an area where kids can enjoy hands-on exploration while learning more about railroads, trains, and depots, as well as collections of photographs and artifacts, historic trains, and a baggage cart and simulator.
State Capitol
The Kansas State Capitol Building sits on Jackson and 10th Streets in the city’s downtown area. Self-guided tours are available on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. On a tour, you can visit the governor’s office, the state Supreme Courtroom, the House of Representatives’ chambers, and the state library. The architecture of this impressive structure alone makes it worth the visit. Throughout much of the city’s skyline, you can see the distinctive copper dome and “Ad Astra” statue.
Kansas Museum of History
The Kansas Museum of History offers unique insights into the history of the state of Kansas. This award-winning location tells the story of the people who call this state home. Some of the items on display include the oldest surviving locomotive in the Santa Fe region, dating back to 1880, as well as a version of the airplane in which aviation pioneer Albin K. Longren made the first successful flight in the early 20th century.
The museum houses 30,000 square feet of exhibition space, along with several outdoor areas with a walking trail. For the kids, additional amenities include a playground, a hands-on discovery gallery, and picnic areas.
During a one-day trip to Topeka, add some or all of these sites to your agenda. You can learn more about the city’s history, as well as experience what life might have been like for some of its earliest residents.
